FN Herstal advertises their SS197SR spec sporting cartridge as suitable for hunting, competition and target shooting – though we would confidently choose this very same ammo for defense purposes as well.
This round is loaded with the 40 grain .22 cal V-MAX. It is a polymer tipped bullet, with the sharp nose, flat base, concentric AMP jacket and voidless swaged lead core which all come together to promote peak accuracy. The V-MAX’s hard polymer tip has a long tail, which extends down into its dense lead core’s precision-formed nose cavity. The tip does not actually touch the base of the cavity, however. This enables the tip to store up momentum before colliding with the base, at which instant it catalyzes violent expansion and fragmentation.
FN Herstal recorded this brass-cased and reloadable cartridge’s muzzle velocity and energy with two firearms. A Five-seveN pistol (4.8†barrel) produces 1,738 fps MV and 268 ME. A PS90 PDW (16.04″ barrel) produces 2,034 fps MV and 368 ft lbs ME.
