Description
Many would say that the 44 Magnum is the “bear†minimum you should carry for defense in the woods. Personally, I’d want at least an M230 30mm chain gun if I had to square off against what is essentially a toothed battering ram, but I’d certainly take a forty-four over the old right hook.
rThis 44 Mag ammunition is designed to do one thing and one thing only: send bears into early retirement. There’s no doubt as to whether a handy fella could use HSM Bear Loads to drop deer with a lever gun. He could. But if you’re looking for conventional home/personal defense ammo, look elsewhere. This ain’t it.
rWhy is that? It’s the 305 grain wide flat nose gas check (WFNGC) bullet, which is designed not to expand. It’ll punch a .429†wide hole through a threat and keep on going out the other side – not ideal terminal ballistics for neutralizing a human assailant.
rThe WFN’s lack of expansion and deep penetration make it perfect for arresting a bear attack, though. Alongside its gas check (which helps the bullet gain more velocity while it’s rocketing through the barrel), the WFN has everything it needs to poke a very deep hole through the various barriers which separate muzzle from bear heart.
