rSteel isn’t just less toxic than lead. It is also less dense, which is why it conserves momentum less efficiently as it flies through the air. That’s the reason for this shell’s perky 1,450 fps muzzle velocity. It gives steel the heavier push it needs reach all the way downrange.
rThis round’s high muzzle velocity doesn’t make its recoil too robust. The lighter one-ounce shot column and AA wad, which sports a compressible midsection, both see to that. Steel is harder than lead, which is why the shell’s shot cup has extra-thick petals – they keep those hard pellets away from the barrel where they don’t belong.
