Description
Precision Made Cartridges (PMC) is a South Korean ammo manufacturer. They are a subsidiary of a much larger metal fabrication concern, and also supply materiel to the South Korean military, but we like PMC best because they ship their X-TAC line of 5.56×45 M855 ammunition to the United States.
rOn the outside, this round’s bullet is functionally identical to a full metal jacket. It has a solid gilding metal exterior with a mid-body cannelure to secure seating in the case, as well as a green-painted tip. Its green tip indicates that the M855 bullet contains a seven-grain steel “penetrator†core. Its core enables the M855 projectile to reliably pass through sheet steel up to ranges well beyond 500 yards. Its separate steel and lead core segments may break apart from one another if the bullet penetrates ballistic gelatin. Most importantly, its penetrator core means that the M855 bullet will attract a magnet.
rThe M855 round’s heavier 62 grain bullet is intended to promote greater accuracy over longer distances. A 1:9†or 1:8†barrel twist is ideal for a 62 grain bullet, but other twists deliver acceptable ballistic performance.
rThis is not military surplus. It is non-corrosive Boxer-primed brass-cased ammo produced recently for the commercial market. Military grade cases like these are not polished around their necks at the factory, as that makes them less reflective. (It’s generally not good to let light shine from your position on a battlefield.)
