This 454 Casull round is from Hornady’s Custom line of ammunition, which they present to provide shooters with all the quality of a meticulously crafted handload from factory loaded ammo. It features its manufacturer’s 300 grain XTP Mag projectile, a bullet that can withstand the higher pressure which a beefy handgun will subject it to. The XTP Mag has serrations that precisely divide it into symmetrical sections, enabling it to expand reliably even if it should strike its target at a lesser velocity. This bullet further offers a jacket which protects its nose, ensuring penetration at impact. (This feature would also facilitate smooth feeding in semi-automatic weapons, but as far as we can tell the only semi-automatic 454 Casull pistols exist in Japanese cartoon shows.)
rThe XTP Mag’s swaged lead core gives it exceptional rotational stability in flight, and contributes even more to the certainty of its expansion. That expansion is controlled by the bullet’s specially engineered jacket, which has varying thicknesses down its entire length. Finally, that its cannelure was applied prior to the XTP Mag’s final formation means it has not caused any discernible distortion that would affect accuracy or terminal performance.
